But as William Gibson said, the future is already here, it’s just unevenly distributed. And so if you go to the edge of society, and you see what’s happening when things like… or you can’t get alone well actually you can get alone, there are crowdsourced ways that you could get alone. There are alternatives so you can do that.
There’s this whole sharable movement of “we’re going to share things. We’re not going to exchange money.” The car share that you see going on, we actually have one starting up here in this… I live in a small town of 5000 people and they’re going to start a car share movement, they’re readying tomorrow night.
And the same thing with borrowing money and its like well, Grameen Bank being one of the earlier models of micro loans. Kiva being another one, but you’re seeing that now at more a local level, so I think that people working with… I mean that the new way of local currency is being another one… okay maybe I can’t get a job, but maybe in my community I can make some local currency and maybe it keeps my costs down. There’s an interesting phenomenon and you have professionals who loan houses and while they can’t, you know, they don’t make enough money to pay the mortgage, but they loan their house on Airbnb, and if they have five people stay a month, that actually covers the mortgage.
So there are alternatives, and all of those alternatives are enabled by the internet, by people being absolutely willing to connect with each other, what Sebastian Paquet calls ‘ridiculously easy group forming’, and that’s what we’re doing, so we’re in this period right now where lots of people are testing up different things. They’re not all going to work. The Occupy Movement was a test of a new way of doing protest or of getting change done. I must say Arab Spring was another one. I mean we don’t know how successful those were or are, but they were tests, and people are going to build up on those pilot projects. We’re going to see some other interesting stuff coming. The same thing around how work is organized, so it’s interesting times and anyone who thinks they have the answers is definitely wrong.
