Marie Puybaraud – That’s what the workplace is, an ecosystem

It would be an interesting experiment actually to let an organization grow very organically, like you would build a city, or like a city would grow. That could create a very different level of complexity within the organization, and you are absolutely right to say that cities take into account diversity at all levels that we can think of. It’s actually a beautiful model of diversity, in a way, for most cities. Yeah, it’s an interesting concept, I mean I think at the end of the day, what we are talking about is the concept of a workplace as an ecosystem. It is the fact that a workplace is made out of individuals, which come together as teams or groups. And to create a community; and they may have their own values, they may their own rules, but yet they behave within a system, an infrastructure which is growing organically, that would be a beautiful model of an organization. And I think probably those who can actually see themselves evolving into an ecosystem into an organization, have a better chance to survive, compared to those who adhere to the rigidity of the organization in terms of processes and rules, which are being established from the top.

And I mean we always come across individuals who are actually behave within that ecosystem very well, and are very creative, and,… but they are out of the norm. You know like… so yeah, it’s an interesting concept. But for me it’s an ecosystem, I think that’s what the workplace is, an ecosystem.

Yet, the capability of the organization to really accept the fact they had different and very broad range of business profile is another matter.

And it’s not because you access it and decode it, that automatically the organization would say, yes, this a true representation of my organization and therefore we need to change everything and recreate a new working environment. But we are getting there, we are getting there, I think that’s definitely the way we need to look at organizations, you know what is that ecosystem, how is it structured, what are the different profile of individuals we have within that ecosystem, what are their needs. So its more people focused, people centered.

Uniformization definitely brings more control. I like the idea of technology being a shelter, the concept of that. I never thought of it, And you’re probably right, it’s like building a façade around you, using, you know, technology in a shell, yeah, around you, using technology. I am not sure how far it would go, I think there are, you know, some indication that the technology is of course playing a much bigger role into our life. And the technology[...]

Marie Puybaraud - It is necessary to maintain a level of physical contact

I think if we only move within digital environments, probably we will lose touch with that physical identity which a workplace can actually bring to an organization. And there is a way to compensate, again that lack of physical environment and yet we’re not yet into a situation where everything is digital. So it’s a scenario for the future, so in any cases I don’t believe organizations can do without a physical environment somewhere, or a place that people can[...]

Marie Puybaraud - You shouldn't control diversity

I think what you are describing in a way, Thierry, is the concept of tribes, the fact that a group can self-perform because they establish their own rules and as you say, they privilege the one who has ideas and can drive the tribes to live differently and grow, compared to the one which are witnesses within the tribes. But the reality unfortunately is not like that, but it could in the future, an organization could behave much more like[...]
