So, some notions of context that’s become tangible and you can use to guide both search and navigation and exploration in this very large space become valuable because in many cases, you’re going to want to follow those activities in the same that in twitter you might follow a particular group of people. Ok? If you have some notions of business context which you can use as a guide to navigation, that allows you sort of in a day-to-day basis to say “oh what am I paying very close attention to”. And the example is I follow 800 people on twitter, but that’s a tiny fraction of the twitter universe.
So, being able to follow people, being able to follow business context in this way, in this sense, is a very important principle for dealing with scaling awareness without overload. And just as now twitter is very effective in using people as weak signals amplifiers using this notion says “ok , I may only be paying careful attention to a subset of these spaces, but if something interesting is going on, I would like we learn about it, when someone else begins to talk about it”. Or some… it’s included in here.
The second thing is, again on the notion of sort of task selectivity, whatever, being able to watch particular things. So, I may watch edits of this page which is the specs what set of specs I’m really interested in. Or that content or space. Someone can email or jab another application when anything is changed, when a tag is added, when a comment is made. Drawing my attention to a particular subset of this massive flow that it wanna be proactively… practically informed about. And then, so this has to do with the sort of focus, being able to turn the dials in same way that you can turn the dials with twitter… It may change over time, it may change over projects… where I am paying particular attention to. Where is my vision pointed. You still have the peripheral vision, which is way beyond there, which is a radical shift from email and other communication.
They are balancing… thing it gives you this peripheral vision is when you do things like search or exploration, you have the widest possible universe… open to you. Ok? So I’m interested… I’m just casually in the purpose of my business do a search which has something to do with maybe Goodyear let’s say.. subcontract I’m interested in. What we do in Goodyear. I find a search yet, someone entirely different, in an entirely different group in Airbus, that’s dealing with Goodyear on an entirely unrelated matter. But, it’s useful to me. I now have discovered that someone in a division in the US, who I’ve never met, don’t know, didn’t even know there was a contract, is doing something that’s of interest to me, that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. Now, I can tag that, I can discuss that, I can contact the person involved.
And, you know, pay a little bit more attention, so there is this notion of technology that supports some focus, you know, technology that supports alerting and notifications, and then those an element of both the socialization, you know, people, and search that broadens your view.
