Ray Wang – The right of being offline

A lot of the changes have been happening on the consumer side and the societal side. That organizations are behind. They’re just catching up. So… I mean this is the same thing when email or chat first came in we all used it, right? Companies banned it but this is ridiculous. We got to have work done. Same thing with devices. People were bringing their own devices to work.

So… I mean we are kind of dictating how the workplace is moving from the bottom up right now. I don’t think that gonna could change. As new technologies evolve, people bring these new technologies into work, I think companies have no choice. When you think about the convergence that’s occurring in general, the change aspects, in terms of not just the technology but in terms of how we adopt change, unless someone goes out and forwards that we are not going to do this anymore, I mean maybe there would be revolts, right? When people say, I’m not going to… I’m going to provide my present. There is one thing that I am very worried about actually, is I think it is of the uttermost importance that we preserve the right to be offline. If we don’t preserve that we’ll loose all our freedoms. It starts with ability to be able to escape … of being offline. And so we can be punished for not being offline. For not being online we cannot be punished. It’s happening right now. We are recreating Skynet, we are recreating Matrix, we are recreating all the things that we would fear on our own. And if we can’t protect that basic right of being able to be offline, and being able to conduct a life offline, we’re in trouble. We are in big trouble.

Ray Wang – Collaborating with customers and suppliers

Customers and suppliers is different. Customers definitely. The customers are your fan base. You have to find ways to take their passion and their delight, and their energy and translate this into new products. That’s a given and that’s not gonna be very difficult. You’ll find that maybe ten per cent of your customers will be actively engaged, five per cent will be willing to provide ideas, and one per cent at least will be help you in co-creation. Right. That’s a very different kind of fact.

When you look at your suppliers… woo that’s a very different story, now there’s money involved. Once there’s money involved things get messy. So, what do you do on the supplier side, we have to think about, you know, where are the limit again, once back to the partner and talking about. So you have to have the limit to be successful.

Ray Wang – Enterprise class software follows five assets

The notion of the software being freeze is not going to change. I don’t think it’s gonna change the quality of the apps that are available, and we are to take the consumer innovations and make them enterprise class. And enterprise class follows five assets. We have five assets of enterprise class that we talk about.

And the first one is scalable, and definitely we have to build the scale up and down on a regular basis. The second one is simple; enterprise apps typically are not simple applications to use. And so we’ve got to get to deliver simplicity that you can use on a device. Then the next three of premium importance. It has to be safe. When it’s safe, it means you can take that to another system and it works and plays well with each other, and then of course it has to be secure. We have to be able to deal with the security and the privacy of that information.

And the more importantly, is sustainable. Not green, not fluffy, I’m talking about sustainable that I can build on a platform at least for five to seven years. And extend it, and build it, and continue to invest in that platform. So we take a task, when we look at the consumer technologies that are very promising, that seem to be easy to use, we have to figure out the enterprise class. Right? Inside an organization, otherwise it’s not going to help you.

Ray Wang – Engagement Applications

We’re just at the beginning. I think we are missing a lot of things. I mean what we are trying to accomplish is a category of applications I’m calling ‘engagement applications’, and these engagement applications have to be able to deliver information in right time, not real time but right time, based on context, like location or context such as semantic, or context such as the relationship you’re in. Right, because afterwards if you want to get more technical.. I dunno how technical you are, so if I get too technical or not technical.

So, the things, for example, on role-based security, that’s going to dictate what I share with you. And the elements in complex event processing that going to determine the rules in our rooms, of each interaction that I’m going to automate over time. Right, so the soft learning mechanism and predictive tools that organize and drive correlation. So we need to put these together and then we need action frameworks that create offers or suggestions that tie back to our networks, tie back to other data, right. So it would living in that kind of engagement world where the engagement of, you, between a person to person or person to machine or machine to machine becomes very important and so, how we structure this new world, of not just peer to peer, its almost machine to machine, those individual relationships.

That’s really where the power is going to come from, it’s how we understand the individual.

Ray Wang – We are not very good at filtering information

I think a lot of the issues when we filter information are we don’t do a good job at filtering information. It’s… You take activity streams for example, on a twitter or facebook wall. That’s the predominant UI in the social world today. You do need filters, you do need there filters against subjects and context, and location…

So the users have to be given some of those capabilities to do better filtering. Right, because we are suffering from information overload, and that data deluge that’s occuring is really creating… probably more addicts than necessary. We have lots of information, we have lots of data, very little information is probably better.
